Every tooth has two main parts and several layers working together. The part you see is the crown; the part in the gum and bone is the root. The outer layer is enamel, the hard white shell that protects the tooth. Beneath it is dentin, a softer, bone-like layer that supports the enamel. At the center is the pulp, holding the nerves and blood vessels. The root is anchored in the jawbone and held by a ligament and the gums. Together these parts let you bite, chew, and speak every day.
