Cavities form when bacteria and sugar slowly damage a tooth. Bacteria in plaque feed on sugar and release acid onto the enamel. The acid pulls minerals from the enamel, leaving a weak white spot. Over time, the enamel breaks down and a small hole forms. The decay then spreads into the softer dentin beneath the enamel. A dentist removes the decay and fills the space to restore the tooth.
