A retinal vein occlusion is a blockage in one of the veins that carries blood away from the retina. Arteries bring blood into the retina, and veins carry it back out. The system only works while both directions stay clear. When a vein becomes blocked, blood cannot drain properly, so pressure builds behind the blockage. That backed-up pressure forces fluid and blood out into the retina, and the retina swells. Vision usually blurs suddenly and painlessly, often in one eye. If the blockage is in the main vein, more of the retina is affected. High blood pressure, diabetes, high cholesterol, and glaucoma all raise the risk, and the chance increases with age. Sudden painless loss of vision in one eye always needs prompt examination. The blockage itself is not removed. Treatment focuses on the swelling, usually with injections into the eye, and sometimes laser, along with managing the underlying health conditions. This video is for general education only.
