Inside every eye sits a clear natural lens, just behind the colored iris. It helps focus light so you can see sharply. In a healthy eye, light passes through that clear lens and comes to a sharp focus on the retina at the back. A cataract forms when proteins in the lens slowly break down and clump together, making the lens cloudy. As the clouding grows, vision can turn blurry or dim. Colors may look faded, and lights can cause glare or halos, especially at night. Most cataracts develop slowly as a normal part of aging, and they are very common in older adults. When a cataract starts to interfere with daily life, it can be removed with surgery. The surgeon takes out the cloudy lens through a very small opening. A clear artificial lens, called an intraocular lens, is placed in the same spot where the natural lens used to be. Once the eye heals, most people notice clearer, brighter vision.
