Diabetic retinopathy is damage to the tiny blood vessels of the retina caused by diabetes. The retina is fed by a fine network of very small blood vessels. Over time, high blood sugar can weaken their walls. Weakened vessels can balloon, leak fluid, and bleed into the retina. Swelling at the macula is a common cause of blurred central vision. Some vessels close off completely, leaving areas of the retina short of blood and oxygen. In more advanced disease, the retina grows fragile new vessels. These are not a repair. They bleed easily and can pull on the retina. Early diabetic retinopathy often causes no symptoms at all, which is why it can be advanced before vision changes. Anyone living with diabetes should have regular dilated eye exams, so changes are found before they affect sight. Managing blood sugar, blood pressure, and cholesterol lowers the risk.
