Macular Hole and Epiretinal Membrane: How It Works, Explained Simply

A macular hole and an epiretinal membrane are two different problems that affect the same small central area of the retina. A macular hole and an epiretinal membrane are two different problems that affect the same small central area of the retina. The macula gives you sharp, straight-ahead vision, so even small changes here are noticeable. An epiretinal membrane is a thin sheet of scar-like tissue that forms on the surface of the macula. As it contracts, it wrinkles the retina underneath, which is why straight lines can look bent and vision may seem distorted. A macular hole is different. The gel inside the eye pulls on the very center of the macula until a small gap opens in it. That usually causes a blurred or dark spot right in the middle of your vision, while side vision stays normal. Both are diagnosed with a scan called an O C T, which photographs the layers of the retina in fine detail. Mild cases may simply be watched. When vision is affected, surgery can peel the membrane away or close the hole, often with a gas bubble and a period of face-down positioning. This video is for general education only.
