Age-related macular degeneration, often shortened to A M D, affects the central part of your vision. At the very center of the retina is a small area called the macula. It handles the sharp, detailed vision you use for reading and recognizing faces. In macular degeneration, the cells of the macula gradually break down, while the rest of the retina keeps working. That is why the center of your view can become blurred, dim, or empty, while your side vision usually stays. Straight lines can also start to look wavy or bent. A doorframe or a line of text may appear to curve. Age is the biggest risk factor. Smoking and a family history of the condition also raise the risk. There are two forms. Dry macular degeneration develops slowly, while the wet form is less common and can change vision quickly. Because early changes are easy to miss, regular dilated eye exams matter, and any sudden distortion or central blur should be checked promptly. This video is for general education only.
