LASIK is a laser procedure that reshapes the cornea, the clear front window of the eye, to change how it focuses light. In an eye that needs glasses, light does not land sharply on the retina. It may focus in front of it, behind it, or unevenly. Because the cornea does most of the eye's focusing, adjusting its curvature can bring light to a sharp point on the retina. First, numbing drops are placed. The surgeon then creates a thin flap in the surface of the cornea and gently folds it back. A cool ultraviolet laser removes a precisely calculated amount of tissue from the layer underneath, following a map of your eye. For nearsightedness the center is flattened slightly. For farsightedness the center is steepened. Astigmatism is smoothed to a more even curve. The flap is then laid back into position, where it seals on its own without stitches. The whole procedure usually takes only minutes per eye. Vision often improves within a day, though dryness and glare are common for a while.
