Keratoconus is a condition where the cornea, normally a smooth round dome, gradually thins and bulges into a cone shape. A healthy cornea bends incoming light evenly, so it lands as a single sharp point on the retina. As the cornea steepens and becomes irregular, light is scattered in different directions instead. That causes blurring, ghosting or streaking around lights, and vision that glasses struggle to fully correct. It often begins in the teens or twenties and can progress for years, sometimes with frequent changes in prescription. Vigorous eye rubbing is linked with progression, which is why eye doctors advise against it. A treatment called corneal cross-linking uses vitamin B two drops and ultraviolet light to strengthen the bonds within the cornea, aiming to stop it getting worse. Vision itself is often corrected with specially fitted rigid or scleral contact lenses. In advanced cases, a corneal transplant may be considered. This video is for general education only.
