Gum disease begins with plaque, a sticky film of bacteria on the teeth. First, the gums turn red and puffy and may bleed. This early stage is gingivitis. If plaque is not removed, the infection spreads below the gumline. Pockets form, and the bone that supports the teeth slowly breaks down. Over time, teeth can loosen as their support is lost. Daily brushing, flossing, and regular cleanings help prevent it. Healthy gums are firm and pink, fitting snugly around each tooth. This video is for general education only.
