Glaucoma is a group of eye conditions that damage the optic nerve, the cable that carries vision from the eye to the brain. The front of the eye is constantly making a clear fluid, which drains out through a spongy channel where the iris meets the cornea. When that fluid cannot drain properly, pressure inside the eye can rise. Over time, raised pressure can damage the delicate nerve fibers at the back of the eye, and the center of the optic nerve begins to hollow out. Glaucoma usually causes no pain and no early symptoms. Side vision is often affected first, and the change can be so gradual that it goes unnoticed. Because damaged nerve fibers cannot be repaired, vision lost to glaucoma does not come back. That is why regular eye exams matter. Checking the pressure, the optic nerve, and the field of vision can find glaucoma before you notice it. Treatment, most often daily eye drops, laser, or surgery, works by lowering the pressure to protect the vision you still have. This video is for general education only. It is not medical advice.
