A dental abscess is a pocket of infection linked to a tooth. It often begins when decay reaches the soft pulp inside the tooth. The infection then travels down the root canal toward the tip. At the root tip, a pocket of pus can build up in the bone. This can cause swelling in the gum and a throbbing ache. A dentist treats it by draining the infection and clearing its source.
