How a Spinal Cord Stimulator Works: How It Works, Explained Simply

A spinal cord stimulator is a small implanted device that aims to change how pain signals reach the brain. Thin wires, called leads, are placed in the space just outside the spinal cord, resting over the back of it. They connect to a small generator under the skin, a little like a pacemaker, but for pain. The device sends gentle electrical pulses that change the pain messages traveling up the cord. Some systems create a light tingling in place of the pain. Newer ones can work without any sensation at all. It doesn't repair the original problem in your back or nerves. It changes how much of that pain you feel. It's usually considered only after other treatments haven't worked, and it is always tested first with a trial. It's honest to say the evidence is mixed. It helps some people, but its long-term benefit is debated, and results vary a lot from person to person. It's also a device. The leads can shift, there's a risk of infection, the battery is replaced over time, and it affects whether you can have an MRI.
