A wisdom tooth that only partly comes in can trap bacteria. A flap of gum often covers part of the emerging tooth. Food and bacteria get trapped underneath this flap. The gum around it can become swollen, red, and sore. The area is cleaned, and the flap or tooth may then be treated. Clearing the trapped debris relieves the swelling.
