Pain is your body's alarm system. It isn't a signal that travels straight from a wound to your brain. It's something your nervous system builds, step by step. It starts at tiny nerve endings called nociceptors, scattered through your skin, muscles, and joints. They sense heat, pressure, or injury. When they fire, the signal travels up a nerve into a relay station in your spinal cord called the dorsal horn. There the message crosses to the other side and climbs a dedicated pathway toward the brain. It reaches the thalamus, which sorts the signal and passes it on. The sensory cortex tells you where it hurts and how much. Deeper regions add pain's unpleasant, emotional edge, which is why pain is never just a measurement. And the traffic runs both ways. Your brainstem sends signals back down that can turn the volume up, or down, like a dial on the pain itself. That's why the same injury can feel different from one day to the next, and why sleep, stress, and mood genuinely change how much something hurts.
