Digital eye strain describes the tired, uncomfortable feeling that builds up during long stretches of screen work. It can include aching or tired eyes, headaches, blurred vision, dryness or watering, and neck and shoulder discomfort. A big part of it is blinking. We normally blink around fifteen to twenty times a minute, but that rate drops sharply when we concentrate on a screen. Fewer blinks means the tear film is not refreshed as often, so the surface of the eye dries out and vision can blur between blinks. Holding focus at one close distance for hours also keeps the eye's focusing muscle contracted, and that sustained effort contributes to the ache. A simple habit helps. Every twenty minutes, look at something about twenty feet away for twenty seconds. That is the twenty, twenty, twenty rule. Set the screen slightly below eye level and about an arm's length away, cut glare from windows and lights, and match screen brightness to the room. There is no good evidence that screen use permanently damages adult eyes. But persistent strain is worth an eye exam, since an uncorrected prescription or dry eye is often behind it.
