Amblyopia, often called lazy eye, is reduced vision in an eye that is otherwise healthy. The problem is not really in the eye, it is in how the brain learned to use it. In early childhood, the brain learns to see. It needs a clear, matching image from each eye to build strong connections for both. If one eye sends a blurrier image, perhaps because it has a much stronger prescription than the other, the brain starts to favour the clearer eye. The same can happen if one eye is turned and pointing elsewhere, or if something like a childhood cataract or a droopy lid blocks its view. Because the stronger eye works well, children rarely complain. Amblyopia is often found only at a vision screening or eye exam. Treatment works best while the visual system is still developing, which is why early detection matters so much. The first step is correcting the underlying problem, usually with glasses, and sometimes surgery for a cataract or a turned eye. Then the weaker eye is encouraged to work. Patching the stronger eye for part of the day is the classic approach, and blurring drops in the stronger eye are an alternative. Consistency and follow-up are what make it succeed.
